Frequently asked questions
How much tax is taken out of a bonus?
Employers usually withhold federal income tax from a separate bonus payment at a flat 22% (37% on supplemental pay above $1 million in a year), plus Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%). State withholding depends on the state and your employer.
Is a bonus really taxed at a higher rate?
No. A bonus is added to your yearly income and taxed at your normal rates. It can feel higher because the flat 22% withholding may be more than the tax you finally owe, and the extra income can push part of it into a higher bracket. If too much was withheld, you get it back when you file.
Why are there two columns?
"Tax you actually owe" is the extra tax created by adding the bonus to your salary. "Typically withheld" is what usually comes out of the bonus check using the flat federal rate. The difference is settled on your tax return.
Does this include local taxes?
No. City, county and school district income taxes, and state payroll premiums such as disability insurance, are not included.
