Frequently asked questions
What are the HSA contribution limits for 2026?
$4,400 for self-only coverage and $8,750 for family coverage under a high deductible health plan. People 55 or older can add $1,000 (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-19).
What counts as a high deductible health plan in 2026?
A plan with a deductible of at least $1,700 for self-only or $3,400 for family coverage, and out-of-pocket costs (not premiums) of no more than $8,500 or $17,000.
How does an HSA save me tax?
Contributions through your employer are taken out before federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare tax, so you save all three. Money you spend on qualified medical costs comes out tax-free, and the balance can be invested and grows tax-free.
Do all states give the state tax break?
Most states follow the federal treatment. California and New Jersey do not let you subtract HSA contributions, so the calculator shows no state saving there. Check your state tax agency for current rules.
Does the limit include my employer contribution?
Yes. The annual limit covers everything that goes in: yours, your employer's and anyone else's. Subtract your employer's contribution from the limit to find how much you can add.
Can I contribute if I am on Medicare?
No. You can only contribute while you are covered by a qualifying high deductible plan and are not enrolled in Medicare.
Estimate only. Uses the standard deduction and 2026 brackets, single earner, no other pre-tax deductions or credits. Talk to a tax or benefits professional about your situation.
