Frequently asked questions
How is overtime pay calculated?
Overtime pay is your hourly wage times the overtime multiplier times your overtime hours. At time and a half (1.5x), a $20 wage earns $30 for each overtime hour.
When is overtime required?
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, covered non-exempt employees must be paid at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. Some employees are exempt, and some states add their own rules, such as daily overtime, so check your state labor department.
What is double time?
Double time pays 2x your regular rate. It is not required by federal law, but some states, employers or union contracts use it for certain hours. Set the multiplier to 2 to see the result.
Is this before or after tax?
This is gross pay before taxes. Overtime is taxed like regular pay, so to see what you keep use a state paycheck calculator.
