Frequently asked questions
What are the long-term capital gains tax rates for 2026?
0%, 15% or 20%, depending on your taxable income. For a single filer the 0% rate applies up to $49,450 of taxable income and the 15% rate up to $545,500; above that it is 20%. Married couples filing jointly: $98,900 and $613,700.
What is the difference between short-term and long-term gains?
Gains on assets you held for more than one year are long-term and get the lower rates. Gains on assets held a year or less are short-term and are taxed like ordinary income at your regular bracket.
How do gains stack on top of my income?
Your ordinary income, after the standard deduction, fills the lower brackets first. Long-term gains are then taxed from where your ordinary income ends. A gain can therefore be split between two rates, for example partly 0% and partly 15%.
What is the net investment income tax?
A 3.8% tax on investment income, including capital gains, when your modified adjusted gross income is above $200,000 (single or head of household) or $250,000 (married filing jointly). It applies to the smaller of your investment income or the amount over the threshold.
What is not included?
State income tax on gains, the sale of a main home (with its own exclusion), collectibles and depreciation recapture taxed at special rates, itemized deductions, and losses carried over from earlier years.
Estimate only, for federal tax. It uses the standard deduction and 2026 brackets. Talk to a tax professional before selling a large position.
