Frequently asked questions

What is the new senior deduction?

A federal deduction of $6,000 per eligible person age 65 or older for tax years 2025 through 2028. It is in addition to the regular standard deduction and the extra standard deduction for people 65 and older (IRS).

Do I have to itemize to get it?

No. It is available whether you itemize or take the standard deduction.

Does it phase out?

Yes. It is reduced when modified adjusted gross income is over $75,000 ($150,000 for joint filers). The law reduces it by 6% of the income over the threshold, so a single filer loses it completely at $175,000.

What is the extra standard deduction for age 65 and older?

For 2026 it is $1,650 per person for married filers, or $2,050 if you are unmarried (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32). The calculator adds it to your standard deduction.

What do I need to claim it?

You must be 65 by the end of the year, include your Social Security number on the return and, if married, file jointly.

Does this make Social Security tax free?

No. It is a deduction for people 65 and older, not an exemption for Social Security benefits. Up to 85% of benefits can still be taxable depending on your other income. Enter your adjusted gross income, including the taxable part of benefits.

Estimate only, for federal income tax. It uses 2026 brackets and does not calculate how much of your Social Security is taxable. Talk to a tax professional about your situation.
