Frequently asked questions
Is Social Security taxable?
It can be. Whether any of your benefits are taxable depends on your "provisional income": your other income plus tax-exempt interest plus half of your benefits. Below the base amount none is taxable, and at most 85% of benefits is ever taxable.
What are the income thresholds?
For single filers, benefits become taxable when provisional income is above $25,000, and up to 85% is taxable above $34,000. For married couples filing jointly the thresholds are $32,000 and $44,000. These amounts are set by law and are not adjusted for inflation.
Does 85% mean I pay 85% tax?
No. It means up to 85% of your benefits is added to your taxable income. You then pay your normal tax rates on it, after the standard deduction.
Does the new senior deduction help?
Yes. For 2025 through 2028 people 65 and older can deduct an extra $6,000 each, subject to an income phase-out. It lowers taxable income but does not change how much of your benefits is taxable, because that is based on income before deductions.
Do states tax Social Security?
Many states do not, but some do. This calculator covers federal tax only. Check your state tax agency.
What counts as other income?
Pensions, IRA and 401(k) withdrawals, wages, interest, dividends and capital gains, and other taxable income. Do not include Social Security benefits themselves, but do add tax-exempt interest in its own box.
Estimate only, for federal income tax, using 2026 brackets and the standard deduction. It assumes all other income is ordinary income. Talk to a tax professional about your situation. See also the senior deduction calculator.
