Biweekly vs Semi-Monthly vs Monthly Pay: What Is the Difference?
The number of paychecks you get each year changes how big each one is, but not what you earn in total. Here is how the common pay frequencies compare for a $60,000 salary.
| Pay frequency | Checks per year | Gross per check | Take-home per check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly | 52 | $1,153.85 | $969.04 |
| Every two weeks (biweekly) | 26 | $2,307.69 | $1,938.08 |
| Twice a month (semi-monthly) | 24 | $2,500.00 | $2,099.58 |
| Monthly | 12 | $5,000.00 | $4,199.17 |

Biweekly: 26 checks
You are paid every other week, usually on the same weekday. Because a year has 52 weeks plus a day or two, you get 26 checks. Two months a year you receive three paychecks, a common way to catch up on bills or savings.
Semi-monthly: 24 checks
You are paid twice a month on set dates, for example the 1st and 15th. Each check is a little larger than a biweekly one because there are fewer of them, and checks always land on the same calendar dates, which makes budgeting simpler.
Weekly and monthly
Weekly pay (52 checks) is common for hourly jobs. Monthly pay (12 checks) is common outside the US and for some salaried roles; each check is the biggest but you wait longest between them.
Does pay frequency change my taxes?
Your yearly tax is based on your yearly income, not on how often you are paid. Withholding per check is scaled to the frequency, so the yearly total is about the same.

Frequently asked questions
Is biweekly the same as twice a month?
No. Biweekly pay comes every two weeks, which is 26 paychecks a year. Twice a month, called semi-monthly, is 24 paychecks on fixed dates such as the 15th and the last day.
Do I earn more with biweekly pay?
No. Your yearly salary is the same. Biweekly checks are smaller, but there are two extra per year, so in some months you receive three paychecks.
How do I convert my salary to a biweekly paycheck?
Divide your yearly gross pay by 26 for gross, and your yearly take-home pay by 26 for net.
